Win. The. Day.

Sometimes in our lives, we latch on to phrases or slogans that help us during difficult times. “WIN THE DAY” has been one that I have latched on to currently, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are many traps out there that put thoughts in our head that don’t necessarily need to be there. These traps can be something we see on the news, or something we read on social media, or even something a spouse or friend says. These traps, if allowed to, can derail your ENTIRE day.

WINNING THE DAY is understanding there are things out there fighting to ruin the very thing the LORD has made which we are supposed to rejoice in: the day.

So, to me, WINNING the DAY is:

1. Controlling what you can control, while not focusing or even thinking about what you can’t. It’s not WORTH IT. I would venture to guess many of us spend way too much time worried about things we can’t control. Have you caught yourself chatting away about the latest COVID-19 conspiracy theory? I have! And it’s silly.

2. Limit your time in the news or on social media. Social media has a way of bringing people down sometimes. Right now, the news is running full throttle on negativity. And negative thoughts that seep in are a surefire way to LOSE the day.

3. Planning your day before the day even begins. Know exactly what you want to accomplish that day and STICK to it. This is a challenge for me sometimes, I’ll be honest, but I feel like I’ve won the day when I have. If you plan to work out today, do it. If you plan to read your book today, do it. Stick to your plan for the day.

4. Don’t focus too much on the future, keep yourself in the moment. Today. We’re not guaranteed tomorrow, so it’s best not to put too much weight in that. Remember the passage in the book of Matthew where it says “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34). It’s easier to WIN THE DAY when you in fact focus on the present.

These are some of the items I try to focus on every day to help me. I hope they help you also.

My daughter has been on a Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood kick lately, and there was one episode we watched last week that really hit a nerve with me. In that show, there are catchy tunes that the characters sing.

The particular song on this episode we were watching was “Enjoy the WOW that’s happening NOW.” This falls right in line with a “Winning the Day” mindset.

I encourage you all to Enjoy the WOW that’s happening NOW. Because trust me, there’s a lot of good in our lives currently, it’s best just to focus on that!
