3 Lessons I’ve Learned From Playing Baseball

In a time where bad news seems to outweigh the good, we received some awesome news this week around where I live. Kids can begin practicing baseball and or softball with their teams again! That is awesome. Kids need that, especially right now. Maybe MLB will be back around before we know it as well…

There are a lot of things you can learn from baseball. I played little league baseball for about 8 years or so, and enjoyed it. While I wasn’t the best player, I still learned a lot looking back. Not just about baseball, but about life.

Here’s 3 things that I learned while playing baseball.

  1. Sometimes it’s best to do things that maximize your strengths and stick to the things you’re good at. I wasn’t the best hitter. Actually, I was a terrible hitter. But I sure was fast. I was fast to the point where people called me Forrest Gump. And since I was fast but couldn’t hit, I became an expert at bunting. My strengths were maximized when I bunted. The same thing happens in life. Find your strengths and take advantage. It’s okay to not be good at everything.
  2. Don’t lie and be honest, especially when your older brother is the coach. When I was younger, I had some anger issues and acted out quite a bit. There was one time I actually got sent home because I had slammed a desk into the wall and yelled at the principal. My brother came and picked me up and he was not happy! I ended up not telling the exact truth about what happened and that made things worse. I remember vividly, he was going to take me to buy some new gear, but that didn’t happen. I was actually not able to practice for 3 practices and couldn’t play the next couple games we had. DON’T LIE.
  3. The most expensive gear doesn’t matter really. I remember this vividly as well. Before the season, I begged my mom to take me out so I could buy the hottest pair of cleats and most expensive pair of socks. I had to look the part right? Wrong. My fresh cleats and new socks did nothing for me and the team. We still lost a lot of games. Looking back, that was a life lesson learned. Fancy clothes don’t mean much. We should place our identity in something greater than frivolous things like that!

Enjoy! There are many lessons you can learn from sports. These are just a few I’ve discovered over the years and reminisced about. Hope they are helpful!

Focus on your strengths. Don’t lie. And place your identity in something greater. VERY VALUABLE things to consider.

Til next time!
